Quality Places Overview
Brevard County is located on the east coast of Central Florida, stretching 72 miles between Volusia and Indian River Counties, totaling nearly 1,275 square miles.
The St.
John's River, along with the counties of Osceola, Orange and Volusia all define Brevard's
western edge.
The Atlantic Ocean provides the county's eastern border and the county
enjoys a number of other features including the St. John's River watershed, sandy uplands,
pine flatwoods and the Indian River Lagoon system.
The Kennedy Space Center, one of the County's most prized landmarks,
provides an impressive backdrop to another prized county feature - the Merritt
Island National Wildlife Refuge. The nearly 140,000 acres of the refuge protects
more threatened and endangered wildlife species than any other refuge in the
country.
The County also boasts an attractive choice of residential settings.
Rural, large-lot lifestyles are still found inland only minutes from the Beach, while detached single-family homes continue to make up much of the County's coastline. For families seeking
closer neighborhood interaction, Brevard offers a variety of new and established
suburban settings as well.
In the face of continued population growth, Brevard County recognizes
its responsibility to protect and support the high quality of life that Brevardians
enjoy. To this end, the County is continuously striving to maintain a strong
economic base while preserving its natural resources. The County has responded
to this challenge by updating the framework of planning policies within its
Comprehensive Plan.
