Mims - ScottsmoorMims is a small rural community in north mainland section of the County surrounded by 100,000 acres of citrus groves. Most of the 8,457 residents enjoy quiet country life that Mims offers. There are nearby boat ramps on the Indian and Saint Johns Rivers that provide access to renowned freshwater and saltwater fishing. The citrus industry is prevalent in this area with packing plants and distribution facilities. The U.S. Highway 1 commercial corridor provides retail and service industry needs for the area. The area know as Scottsmoor just north of Mims offers a similar landscape and country lifestyle. Port St JohnLocated between Titusville and Cocoa, Port St. John is a fast growing area. Proposed development is expected to increase the current population of 17,932 to 20,000, for this mainland neighborhood by the year 2010. Newly constructed and existing homes are in affordable ranges making the area a popular choice for retirees on fixed incomes and young families that work in nearby communities. There are several retail shopping areas and the Gateway Center, a 120,000 square foot high tech professional office park. The active business district includes financial companies, banks, family medical centers, and restaurants. The neighborhood is served by three elementary schools and a middle school. There is a new community center and a boat ramp that provides excellent fishing and boating access to the Indian River. Manatees and dolphins can be seen in the river here regularly.
It's future as a bedroom community would be dependent on planned roadways and bridges being considered at the time by Brevard County. Local sources indicate that General Development Corporation routinely assigned names to its planned developments with Port in the Title such as Port Malabar and Port St. John. The St. John's River to the west of the community was named by early Spanish explorers for Saint John the Baptist and was called San Juan Baptista. The early French explorers to the region knew the St. John's as the River of May. The river flows 273 miles through Central and North Florida and has a drainage area of 8,840 square miles in which the western portions of the Port St. John community are located. The Port St. John community is located in an area that was, in 1821, formally a part of St. John's County, as was all of present day Brevard County. This was established under an ordinance signed by then General Military Governor of Florida, Andrew Jackson. Brevard County was later established in 1844.
SuntreeSuntree is a community of 14,557 persons located in Central Mainland Brevard County just north of Melbourne. Suntree is a new and well maintained golfing community. It is located just off Interstate I-95 and within short distances to retail centers, beaches, parks, refuges, and the Brevard Zoo.
