NOTICE
Brevard County experiences extreme and heavy mosquito breeding activity countywide with Central Brevard, (Merritt Island) and the south beaches being impacted the most. The salt marsh mosquitoes are the main culprit and are aggressive daytime and nighttime biters and are prolific breeders that hatch in broods with tens of millions of mosquitoes going to wing at one time. Facts to remember:
Saw mosquito activity more than double than what has been experienced in this region over the past few years. The District treated more acres this year than what was treated in 2009 and 2010 combined. Mosquito treatments increased over 250% from 2010..
Due to drought conditions experienced so far this year, the impoundments are not yet fully operational in these areas. As the average salt marsh mosquito lives 30 days, we expect that the controlling effect of the impoundments will not be fully felt until July or August of this year. Until that time, any rain event will cause mosquitoes to hatch in a 5 to 7 day period in any area that holds water. Though the district is scheduling adult mosquito treatments nightly and have a kill effect of 90% on the specific targeted brood, new broods can hatch the following day and it may appear that no treatments have taken place or that mosquito populations have increased. It is also important to note that mosquito treatments cannot take place if it is raining or winds exceed 10 to 15 mph by truck and air. We invite you to view our website at ww3.brevardcounty.us/mosquito which provides the areas to be treated nightly. You can also view the areas that were successfully treated the previous evening. Our daily phone message is updated every day by 2:00 p.m. Please call 321-264-5032, extension 1 and those spray areas scheduled for treatment each evening will be listed.
