On June 24, 1988, the “Environmental Field Station” was opened by the Brevard
County Natural Resources Management Office. This 122 year old church was rewired,
painted, and generally spruced up for use by the community as an environmental
learning facility. The Field Station is located directly across the street from the banks of the Indian River. The natural beauty surrounding the building has been retained and enhanced. A butterfly garden has been constructed and native orchids, ferns, and wildflowers can be seen throughout the site. Since its renovation, the Field Station has served as a meeting place,
a research facility, and a teaching facility for various environmental agencies,
organizations and schools. Grade school classes frequently visit the Field
Station for hands-on learning experiences. Currently, the Field Station houses
exhibits of shells, insects, and other educational displays.
