DUNE RESTORATION PROJECT

Sea Oats

In February 2003, 62,255 native dune plants were installed on the newly restored beach at all street ends and public parks between Port Canaveral and Patrick Air Force Base. Another 18,117 native dune plants were installed on the newly restored dunes at Loggerhead Park and Ocean Park in Melbourne Beach, and along the Indialantic Boardwalk. The native vegetation, mostly sea oats, helps form and maintain protective dunes by trapping and stabilizing wind-blown sand. In addition to the general admonition against treading upon dune vegetation, the public is asked to be especially mindful of avoiding the newly planted areas while accessing the beach.

The project was made possible with grant funding secured by the Natural Resources Management Office from the Coastal Impact Assistance Program. This program was authorized by Congress in 2001 to provide financial assistance to coastal states impacted by outer continental shelf activities.
