BREVARD COUNTY SHORE PROTECTION PROJECT
FUNDING

Congress granted federal authorization to the Brevard County Shore Protection Project in 1996. The initial renourishment (also called restoration) of the North and South Reaches began in 2000 and ended in 2003. Work was suspended annually for the 6-month turtle-nesting season.

Federal emergency funds were used during March and April of 2005 to restore Project areas that were eroded by the recent hurricanes. Federal funds were used to replace all sand lost during the 2004 hurricane season, while the restoration of sand lost before or after that time frame relied upon a mix of federal, state, and local funding.

In total, the federal government provided 83% of the renourishment funding. The remaining renourishment costs were the responsibility of Florida and Brevard County. State funding for 8% of the project costs was provided through the State of Florida’s Strategic Beach Management Program. The County share of 9% was financed with revenue collected from local hotels and motels as a Local Option Tourist Development Tax earmarked for beach restoration.

The Brevard County Natural Resources Management Office and the Army Corps of Engineers jointly managed this project.
