EMERGANCY DUNE STABILIZATION PROJECT - HOME |
|
Mid Reach
The Mid Reach starts immediately south of Patrick Air Force Base and extends to Flug Avenue in Indialantic.
|
South Beaches
The South Beaches extend south from North Spessard Holland Park to Sebastian Inlet State Recreation Area.
|
This project was a combination of two similar projects repairing the Mid Reach and South Beaches: The FEMA Emergency Berm Project and the State Interim Dune Project.
The FEMA Emergency Berm Project protected the dune line along developed properties located in the Mid Reach and South Beaches areas that FEMA determined to be “At Risk.”
The State Interim Dune Project repaired the dunes along developed properties in the Mid Reach and South Beaches that were not covered under the FEMA project.
Contractors stabilized the dunes by constructing sand berms along the seaward edge of the eroded bluffs using beach quality sand brought in by trucks from upland sources. Altogether, these efforts placed 559,500 cubic yards of beach-quality sand along the Mid Reach and South Beaches—enough sand to fill 27,500 commercial dump trucks: a bumper-to-bumper convoy from Cocoa to Orlando and back again!
